in daly city where crews have plenty of work ahead of them. cate. >> reporter: michelle, you are right. the equipment behind me you can see is in place and ready to go and clean-up crews are expected to be back in daly city in a few hours to continue yesterday's work. that water main break caused quite a mess. you see that thick layer of mud covering the road in front of neighbors' homes. from above, our chopper 5 shows you how far it extended. 12 homes were evacuated after 45,000 gallons of water caused that land slide yesterday morning. neighbors are still worried about the integrity of the hillside. there was no damage to the homes. >> hopefully nothing will happen. especially with the rain coming this weekend. >> reporter: engineers tested the hill before allowing people back into their homes.

city officials say an 8" pipe connected to a water tank burst and they blame the pipe's old age. it was made in the 1930s. city officials say they will be working hard to fix the pipes. they say the pipes are still basically -- there could be more old pipes like the one that broke yesterday. there's a lot of work to be done. live in daly city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. so who is going to pay that cleaning bill? car owners whose auto insurance policies include comprehensive coverage are automatically protected no matter where the car was parked. they should file a claim immediately. but drivers who don't have comprehensive coverage should submit a claim to daly city within six months. forms are available at city hall. the red cross is trying to find shelter for an el sobrante family after fire damaged their home. the attic fire sent one firefighter to the hospital

with minor injuries. residents inside smelled smoke before the alarm went off. the fire caused at least $80,000 in damage. right now pg&e crews are working to fully restore power at san francisco's city hall. last night a small fire in the electrical room in the basement triggered the smoke alarms and formed the evacuation of the about. the fire department tells us there's just minor damage to the electrical room and they aren't sure how it started. city hall should be open for business as usual today. sierra lamar's accused killer faces new charges this morning. 21-year-old antolin garcia torres was been charged with trying to kidnap three other victims during three cam,ing in 2009. lamar disappeared in march of this year. torres was arrested in may for her kidnapping and murder even though lamar's body has not been found. we are getting a look at two men suspected of kidnapping a woman and driving her from atm to atm in the east bay.

walnut creek police say this video shows two men trying to withdraw money from a woman's account. she told police they grabbed her outside her office threw her in the back of her car. the suspects drove around to at least three other machines before dumping her and the car in the oakland hills. >> this doesn't happen here. the woman told the police the suspects were named david and aubrey. police say they escaped in a smaller older darker colored pickup truck possibly a toyota with a loud muffler. a pair of santa clara county jail nurses could end up behind bars themselves. they are accused of stealing inmates's prescription drugs. officials say when the two were arrested, they had some of the drugs in their possession. it's not clear if they were working together or alone. an audit at the port of oakland has turned up to $800,000 in questionable expenses. that's according to a source

who spoke with the "san francisco chronicle." executive director omar benjamin retired monday abruptly, amid scrutiny about travel and other expenses. some naked people are likely to show up on the steps of san francisco city hall at noon today. a protest is planned against a proposed ban on nudity in the city. a lawyer says she plans to take the case to federal court. she wants to block san francisco supervisors from voting next tuesday on the ban. >> i'm hoping they brought their sunscreen today. >> if you are heading outside today, it's not as cold as it has been. we have patchy fog in toward parts of the north bay valley. temperatures fairly mild compared to last couple of

it's 5:13. let's check the roads. >> liz, take it away. a lot every our overnight roadwork has been picked up. except some emergency work they are doing in san jose. they have closed that off-ramp to the alameda from southbound 880 also that on-ramp 11:15 they will open the on- and off- ramps. out to highway 4 now. eastbound highway 4 bailey to railroad actually still that full freeway closure in loveridge. a lot of roadwork going against the roadwork. they have opened up a lot of things in the east bay. if you ares crossing the nimitz, 880 through oakland, various lanes blocked from fruitvale to embarcadero. everything is picked up now. we just got off the phone with

caltrans so pretty quiet there heading down towards oakland, airport or coliseum towards hayward. westbound 580 through the altamont pass. that drive time still green 15 minutes through the altamont pass and 680. you can see things picking up through pleasanton. mass transit we always like to encourage you to use mass transit. so far everything is reporting no delay including bart systemwide. that's traffic. here's lawrence. this day is flying by. outside today looks like a nice day out there. enjoy it. we are going to see a lot of sunshine in most spots and the temperatures will warm up nicely. not too bad this morning. 40s and 50s breezy in the hills approaching the coastline. high pressure strengthening today. a lot of 70s common even at the coastline. we could see a few 70s at the coastline. over the top of that ridge we have a few high clouds running right on through. we are going to see those

continue to move by throughout the day today but high pressure holding strong. we have this low off the coastline that will likely bring a change in the weather. we'll see more clouds on that toward thursday, maybe some rain late thursday night into friday. today the warmest day. week still passing clouds outside and then tomorrow clouds thickening up and then by late tomorrow night into friday morning a chance of rain expecting more rain on and off on friday and possibly into saturday too. so i think this storm system will open the door. there is a stronger storm expected to move in saturday night into sunday. temperatures in the bay area today, 74 morgan hill, 72 palo alto, 70 half moon bay. east bay 72 degrees livermore, 70 napa, 71 pleasant hill. inside the bay enjoy the sunshine, maybe a little picnic for lunch, that would be great, 71 degrees in oakland, 70 san francisco, and 73 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days we start to cool down a little bit tomorrow. more clouds on the way.

then by late thursday night into friday a chance of showers, looks like showers on and off a little stormy especially into sunday. more showers possible through the first part of next week. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you. separate bombings in northern iraq have killed at least 10 people. a police officer says today's attacks in kirkuk started with a parked car bomb explosion near the offices of a kurdish party followed by another bomb as police gathered there. a similar bomb hit an iraqi army patrol west of kirkuk. japanese television crew captured a rare funnel cloud in japan today. it was hovering near the port city of arita. it did not reach land. public broadcaster nhk says there was no damage, just some really cool pictures. yesterday, nancy pelosi was asked by the media but says sorry, you're going to have to wait. >> while i love you all very

dearly, i thought maybe i would talk to my own caucus before i shared that information with you. >> 72-year-old democrat easily won re-election in liberal san francisco district but party failed to score enough house seats to regain a majority so she may step down from her leadership post. the news conference in washington set for 7:00 our time. president obama will speak with reporters. he plans to discuss the deadline for democratic and republican leaders to reach a budget deal that addresses the nation's debt. today he will talk to labor leaders including members of general electric, walmart and ford. thea pharmacy in massachusetts distributed silicon injections that have been linked to the outbreak of fungal meningitis that killed 32 people in the country. lawmakers want to find out who

knew what about the outbreak and when. this morning, millions of toyota cars are being recalled around the world including 670,000 right here in the u.s. the recall involves the prius and other models produced since the year 2000. there's a defect in the steering shaft that could cause steering problems. and 630,000 cars are being recalled for water pump problems. artifacts were stolen from the oakland museum monday night. security guards watched the heist happen from surveillance video and following protocol called police but not before the burglars took off. it may have been the work of copycats. >> there have been some high- profile museum thefts in recent months and years and it may have emboldened people. >> it might be the inspiration of those guys who stole the picassos and everything. >> police aren't saying what

planning to continue what they started yesterday. if you look at the video, we'll show you just how bad it got. take a look at all of this mud and this mess. that water main burst brought down inches of mud. i remember walking through it. you can see just again how bad it was. a clean-up though last night went well into the night in the daly city neighborhood. taking a look from above, from our cbs 5 chopper, neighbors were startled at about 4:30 in the morning when police told them to leave their homes. 45,000 gallons of water came downhill after that water main burst. city leaders say it was because of a cast iron pipe made in the 1930s. >> you can see the pipe actually sheared off. we know we have an aging system. we know we have pipes in the ground that are close or past useful life. that's not uncommon within any bay area community. >> reporter: now, no homes were damaged. 12 families were told to evacuate yesterday. some of their cars were actually swallowed up in the

francisco city hall prompted a brief evacuation over night. le crews say it started in the basement before 9:30 last night. they called out pg&e when they saw smoke had come from a problem with an electrical panel. no reports of any damage or injuries. city hall should be open for business later today. a man accused of murdering morgan hill teenager sierra lamar facing more charges. 21-year-old antolin garcia torres is being charged with three counts of attempted kidnapping during a carjacking that dates back to march 2009. lamar disappeared in march 2012. he was arrested in may for kidnapping and murder even though her body hasn't been recovered. new video of two suspects who kidnapped a woman and threw her in the back of her car. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in walnut creek this morning with that surveillance video. she joins us with more. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, police released this yesterday and they have gotten a lot of tips last night and overnight. but they still haven't made an

arrest as far as we understand. so we want to show you these pictures one more time. it happened here at a business park in walnut creek. this is surveillance camera. the woman was tied up in the back of the car after about three hours kidnapped trying to get into her car at the business park they let her go in the oakland hills. here's the description police are trying to circulate right now. two white men in their early 20s, one 5'9", one is 5'11". the taller one may have been named david. they were calling him david in the car. the woman said he had broad shoulders and dark hair. the shorter one was possibly named aubrey and was possibly skinny. we have those pictures on our

website, cbssf.com. live in walnut creek, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. it's 5:34. let's check the weather. i guess we have to enjoy today, right? >> beautiful. >> loving it today. this could be a beach day. maybe one of the last, yeah. because in the next few days we are going to see big changes coming up. i think back to the rain once that storm door opens up we'll see showers on and off for some time to come. out there now we have a few high clouds drifting overhead. the temperatures staying mild with an offshore wind this morning although it is cool in some of the valleys. in the north bay we have 41 in santa rosa, 45 in san jose. 55 in san francisco. and 56 in oakland. i think as we head toward the afternoon we are going to enjoy sunshine and a few passing high clouds as high as 74 in morgan hill. 72 degrees in san jose. east bay numbers running into the 70s again today. so just some beautiful weather outside. and inside the bay looking good. how about 70 degrees in san francisco? about 71 in oakland. 70 in alameda. maybe about 70 degrees in half moon bay on the coast. so yeah, looks like a good day

to get to the beach if you can. we have showers on the way. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> beach weather and it's almost thanksgiving. thanks, lawrence. outside live right now across the golden gate bridge i guess they just picked up that roadwork on southbound 101 on the approach to the waldo tunnel so yeah, everything is flowing nicely now. the lane change trucks drove through so now there's more southbound 101 lanes open towards traffic heading into s we just got word from caltrans that they have to block that carpool toll lane on northbound 680 at andrade road. they are doing roadwork. emergency roadwork in san jose southbound 880 off-ramp to the alameda is shut down. the on-ramp is also shut down until 11:15 this morning. so we were wondering why there's slowing on westbound 4 in antioch. there's an accident near lone tree on the shoulder. we just got word from chp. but an unusual amount of brake lights in those westbound lanes as you head towards the pittsburg-bay point area.

plane in mississippi. the "piper p-a 32" had just well, three people are dead after a fiery crash of a single- engine plane in mississippi. the piper p.a. 32 just had taken off from jackson when it crashed into a home yesterday. one person was in that home and escaped with minor injuries. no one else was hurt.

cause unknown. all three victims on the plane who were traveled to the federal aviation administration safety conference were okay. an e.r. doctor of the year is accused of causing a dramatic crash in massachusetts. watch the third car in the line of traffic. it comes out of nowhere. an suv. look at that. out of a parking lot over a grassy area crashes into the car. the impact pushed it into a truck in the next lane. dr. howard is accused of driving under the influence. they have cameras everywhere now. >> no kidding. futures trading points towards higher opening this morning on wall street. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us. >> good morning. >> reporter: asian stocks got a lift after greece held a sale of short term treasury bills tuesday. the tokyo's nikkei broke a seven-day losing streak hong kong's hang seng gained 1%.

bad news on wall street yesterday. the dow was down nearly 59 cushioned by a surge in home depot stock while the nasdaq was down 20. millions of shares of facebook could be looking for an investor to friend them on the stock market. a lockup period on stock issued to the company's first employees and investors ends today. now they can unload the stock that's lost nearly half of its value since facebook's ipo in may when its stock was offered at $38 a share. i think we are going to see a lot of defriending going on. >> are you a big texter? >> reporter: oh, yeah. a big texter and yeah, i guess they are saying it's going out of style. i can't believe that. one analyst says people are texting less. for the first time in history the number of monthly texts has dropped on average people send 675 texts a month compared to 700 earlier this year but it's not that they are communicating

less. instead of texting, they are using apps like skype, google voice and facebook or they are getting text services like apple's i-message and blackberry's messenger. 675? that's low. >> that seems like a lot. >> you are a texter. >> i am. >> sometimes that's the best way to communicate. >> i think so. >> ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com thank you. commerce, crab season opens tomorrow. but bay area consumers may have to pay more for local dungeness crab. fishermen say they are expecting a modest catch this year. last year a stalemate over price delayed the commercial season until after thanksgiving. crabbers say they want $3 per pound this year but buyers say they think 2.50 a pound is fair. snow fans with a day off may be heading to the sierra today where heavenly and other ski resorts are open for business a couple of days ahead of schedule. the last round of storms dumped

more than 3 feet of fresh snow. heavenly needs a few more storms before it opens all lifts. other resorts open tomorrow. i haven't skied here yet but i'm excited for snow season. >> folks, around the bay area today, we are expecting a great day, a lot of sunshine. it will be the warmest day of the week today. enjoy it. temperatures now 40s and 50s. a little breezy as you approach the hills at the coastline. this afternoon, yeah, should be a beach day. 60s and low 70s there. a lot of 70s inside the bay. and mild to warmups as we'll see temperatures pushing up into the mid-70s. so high pressure strengthens today and that will bring with it lots of sunshine although a couple of clouds rolling across the top of the ridge of the the rain line well to the north. that's going to change late thursday night. we have this low pressure area off the coastline. that is slowly going to approach the bay area late tomorrow night and into friday to bring another round of rain

a stronger storm, elizabeth, if you have plans this weekend, on sunday. how about that? >> i do have outdoor plans. i was checking with lawrence yesterday to see what's up with the weekend forecast. for right now though we are dry and the commute has no hot spots. so on the bridges, here's a live look at the bay bridge where you can see maybe some slight delays in a couple of the cash lanes. but those middle lanes, those are the fastrak lanes and as you can see those lanes are moving fine. that's our indicator that the metering lights are still off. elsewhere to our other bridges. san mateo bridge looking good both directions of westbound and eastbound 92. and they just picked up some roadwork on the approach to the golden gate bridge. southbound 101, from sir francis drake down to the waldo tunnel they had various lanes blocked but they are now all open free and clear. look at the westbound 4 commute unusually backed up even for this time of the morning. it's because of an accident on the right-hand shoulder so no longer lanes blocked but apparently that accident is
